About That Suburban Momma
I'm Jenna Hartwell — mom of three (10, 7, and 4: two in elementary, one in preschool), wife of a man who still believes the calendar "will sort itself out," and a former middle-school front-office manager. Eight years behind that desk taught me the single most useful thing I know about family life: every family crisis is actually a calendar problem. The kid crying at drop-off? Rushed morning. The forgotten cleats, the missed picture day, the reply-all carpool meltdown? Calendar, calendar, calendar.
So this site is about the calendar — and the stations, run-sheets, and sign-up sheets that keep it honest. Not feelings about the schedule (there are wonderful writers for that), not what to cook, wear, or bring to the party — just the logistics of a family in the school-age years, when your real address is the minivan and practice starts at 5:15 whether you're ready or not.
Here's the route map: school mornings & nights for the daily bookends (start with the school morning routine — the post this whole site is built around), command center for the wall that runs the house, sports & carpool for the season logistics, neighborhood life for block parties and playdate diplomacy, and breaks & summer for when the bell schedule disappears and takes your structure with it.
What you won't find: judgment. If your family runs beautifully on vibes and a single magnet from a pizza place, I salute you sincerely. I built our command-center wall three times before it stuck, my ten-year-old still occasionally leaves her shin guards in the driveway, and the color-coding is for me, not for Instagram. Systems are how I stay kind at 7:38am. That's the whole philosophy.
A housekeeping note for long-time internet residents: this domain hosted a lovely 2012-era family blog by a previous owner; it's now under new stewardship, and everything you'll read here is new.
A note on affiliate links: some posts contain affiliate links — if you buy through one, I may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. I only link gear that's survived an actual season in our actual minivan.
